Temenos T24 Data Migration Case Study

End-to-End Ethix to Temenos T24 Core Banking Data Migration

A practical perspective on the data migration activities involved in transforming a banking environment from Ethix core banking to Temenos T24 across the bank's migration requirements and modules.

The Core Banking Transformation

Core banking migration is one of the most demanding data transformation programmes a bank can undertake. The objective is not simply to move records from one database to another, but to ensure that customer, account, product, financial and transactional information retains its business meaning in the target banking platform.

As part of the Al Masraf core banking transformation, the migration involved moving data from the existing Ethix core banking platform to Temenos T24.

The work covered the end-to-end data migration lifecycle, from understanding the legacy data and defining mappings through transformation, loading, validation, reconciliation, migration testing and cutover activities.

End-to-End Migration Lifecycle

The migration was approached as an integrated process rather than as an isolated ETL exercise.

Understanding the Legacy Data

A successful migration begins with understanding the source environment. The Ethix data structures had to be analysed to determine how existing banking data should be represented within the Temenos target.

This required assessment of data structures, relationships, reference data, business rules and data-quality characteristics.

Key Data Areas

  • Customer information
  • Accounts
  • Products
  • Balances
  • Transactions
  • Deposits
  • Loans and financing
  • Reference data
  • Branch information
  • Customer and account relationships

Migration Across T24 Banking Modules

The migration was not restricted to a single customer or account dataset. It required consideration of the bank's migration requirements across multiple T24 banking modules and business areas.

Customer Data

Customer identification, classifications, relationships and associated banking products.

Accounts

Account structures, products, currencies, branches, statuses, balances and customer relationships.

Deposits

Deposit products, principal amounts, maturity information and related customer and account data.

Loans & Financing

Contract information, outstanding balances, repayment information, schedules and product classifications.

Transactions

Transaction dates, value dates, amounts, currencies, references, transaction types and account relationships.

Reference Data

Branches, products, codes, classifications and other reference information required by the target environment.

Data Mapping

Data mapping was a critical part of the migration. The objective was not simply to establish a source-field-to-target-field relationship.

Each mapping required an understanding of the underlying banking data and how the information should be represented in Temenos T24.

Data Transformation

Source data required transformation before it could be loaded into the target environment.

  • Data cleansing
  • Standardisation
  • Code conversion
  • Product mapping
  • Reference-data transformation
  • Business-rule implementation
  • Target-format preparation

Validation and Reconciliation

A migration cannot be considered successful simply because data has been loaded into the target system. The migrated data must also be validated and reconciled.

The real measure of migration success is whether the business can trust the data after it reaches the target banking platform.

Data Validation

  • Record-level validation
  • Missing-record analysis
  • Duplicate detection
  • Mapping validation
  • Transformation validation

Financial Reconciliation

  • Account balances
  • Debit and credit totals
  • Product-level balances
  • Currency-level totals
  • Transaction totals

Mock Migration and Cutover Readiness

Migration rehearsals provide an opportunity to identify data, mapping, transformation and operational issues before production cutover.

Each migration cycle can be used to refine the migration process, improve reconciliation, resolve exceptions and increase confidence in the final production migration.

Production cutover then becomes the culmination of the preparation, testing, validation and reconciliation performed throughout the migration programme.

Lessons from an End-to-End T24 Migration

The experience reinforced several principles that remain relevant to core banking transformation programmes.

Migration Is a Business Programme

Banking migration requires understanding both technology and the business meaning of the data.

Mapping Requires Domain Knowledge

Successful mapping depends on understanding customers, accounts, products, contracts, balances and transactions.

Reconciliation Starts Early

Reconciliation requirements should influence the migration design from the beginning.

Mock Migrations Matter

Migration rehearsals expose issues that may not become visible during individual development activities.

Every Bank Is Different

Source systems, product configurations, data quality and business requirements determine the migration approach.

Data Must Remain Traceable

Source, transformation, target and reconciliation results should form a clear migration trail.
